Joining daggerboard case

Categories: Main Hull

I’ll spare the boring details of fairing the float – suffice to say that we’re still making (slow) progress on it.  Have been spending some time fairing and then some time doing other bits to keep prepping for the main hull.

This weekend I joined the daggerboard case.  Due to some other commitments I was unable to rip the spacers needed during the week, and dinner out with friends of the family meant it was too late to fire up the saw Saturday evening.  Fortunately, friends of the family we had dinner with said I could come by their house early Sunday morning to use the table saw and rip the spacers needed — Thanks for letting me make saw-dust at 8.30 on a Sunday morning, Fred!

Joined one side at a time – was very difficult to get room to do it all at one shot, and I still haven’t done the uni-directional on either sides.

The first side went like this

Now – you’ll notice it sitting on its side because, well, that’s how I was thinking would work best….

for anyone that has not joined the daggerboard case yet, I strongly suggest against doing this.  It turned out well enough except two spots towards the deck side which came away under the weight of the fabric despite me coming back to it a few times after I thought it had gelled sufficiently.  Will need to grind those two spots and do a small repair.  You’ll see for the second side I wised up a little:

Didn’t get a good shot of the cheek block plate though.  I ended up shaping a piece of fiberglass from the hole that was cut and used it for the spacer.

Completely forgot to take a picture of the screws for the plate threaded into the fiberglass (was very thick and had no problems tapping it, despite my concern about whether it would work or not).  Got everything placed properly and bedded in 5200.  Bought the smallest tube I could find – 1oz, and a ton still went to waste.
